So we were having a nice discussion about Hammonds’ views on black female sexuality.
Well, at least, I thought it was nice.
Might’ve been the only one who really understood it though besides one of the black girls, since Lesbian Activist only cares about lesbian issues, not race, and the other girl who usually knows her shit kept falling into some nonsense about “I was raised in a really privileged environment where the couple of black kids at my school were well off too so I think economic status is a bigger factor than race” while completely neglecting to realize that you cannot talk about class without talking about how it is not a coincidence that marginalized races take up a disproportionate amount of the marginalized classes.Basically it boiled down to:
- Because the sexuality of black women is portrayed so pervasively throughout western society and the media as aggressively hypersexualized (and always has been), black women historically speaking have found themselves in a position where their only option is to be silenced, for the very legitimate fear that actually giving their sexuality the healthy discussion it deserves would inevitably feed into and confirm the hypersexualized stereotype.
- It is no coincidence that purity and sexual passivity did not actually become quite so deeply ingrained into the stereotypes of white femininity until /right at the time/ European society began to meet other races and define them as exotic, erotic, and sexually aggressive. (prior to this point, many societies actually viewed women as sexually weak and unable to control themselves, prone to adultery or seduction) “Femininity” was, at least in part, and at least at some point in time, defined specifically to exclude women of color (or at least, women of color according to societal stereotypes).
Two really nice points that I enjoyed hearing about and having put down so concretely in words.
That is, until one of the Gay Boys Who Sit In The Back decided this would be a great time to respond to the aforementioned Thoughtful Black Girl with, I shit you not, “Don’t call white people ‘noncolored,’ we aren’t literally white, we’re light tan, and we all probably have some colored ancestry because this is a mixed society now.”
Thank you, GBWSITB, for your completely irrelevant semantics-deflection bullshit.
